Golf isn't really an extreme sport but it sure has made more than a few good men go crazy. I'd never photographed the sport before but I'm well aware of it having come from a family of golfers. The 2007 Del Webb Father / Son Challenge was held at Champions Gate in Orlando and with some of Golf's greatest in attendance it was the perfect opportunity for me to get a few shots in my own way. Cameras were only allowed during the practice and Pro/AM rounds but that was all I needed. Golf photography has it's own etiquette and it's very important for the photographer to make himself invisible and silent so as not to bother the players. Once the golfer has addressed the ball you must remain still until he has hit it. This makes it real hard to get a nice action shot. The only way is to put some real distance between myself and the players and do the best I can with what I have to work with. This worked out pretty well as i was able to capture some nice action shots along the way.
I was fortunate to have been invited to join the group that was paired with Greg Norman during the Pro/Am round and got to follow them for several holes before dropping back and catching some other players like Mark O'Meara, Raymond Floyd, Vijay Singh, Tom Lehman, Craig Stadler, Billy Casper, Bernhard Langer, Fuzzy Zoeller, David Duval, Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino. Embedded in the fivesome I was able to shadow one of golf's greatest with the best vantage point on the course.
The real thrill came on the 18th green as two of golf's greatest stood before me. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus finished their rounds and I stood there in awe as these two gentle giants holed out. I remember my father watching them on tv when they were in their prime and the excitement they created. They sure don't make them like that anymore that's for sure. Having the opportunity to photograph these living legends was rewarding enough but the icing on the cake came when they both signed my ticket for the perfect souvenir of the event. These galleries are from one of my favorite shoots when I followed the Shark and found the Golden Bear.
